Best known as the singer and songwriter from Starsailor, James Walsh brings his distinctive voice and heartfelt songs to an intimate 45-seat room at Whitetail @ The Hart. This is a rare chance to see the singer-songwriter behind songs such as ‘Alcoholic’, ‘Good Souls’ and ‘Silence Is Easy’ in a close-up setting.

Alongside his work as Starsailor's singer and songwriter, James has developed a prolific solo career. His EP Renewal is a showcase of raw vulnerability, tender balladry and deeply personal songwriting.

Renewal

'Renewal' contains four tracks and follows the singles 'All That I've Got Left' and 'A Lucky Strike'. The Bandcamp version of the EP also features two exclusive tracks that can't be heard anywhere else: 'Beautiful & Strange' and the emotive 'My Happiness to just your smile away'.

James recorded 'Renewal' at the iconic RAK Studios in London, in just one day. Having previously recorded much of his solo work at home, he was hankering after something new, and used the unbridled energy and creativity of the studio's team to create the EP.

One of the standout songs is the evocative 'Strangers at the Bar', a hauntingly beautiful story of capturing those precious moments of magic whilst escaping the everyday existence of a long-term relationship.

Strings attached

Whilst James is the primary instrumentalist on all the tracks, 'Renewal' also features critically acclaimed cellist Izzi Dunn, who has previously worked with the likes of Jamie T, Damon Albarn, Gorillaz and George Harrison. Her stunning strings elevate the emotion of the music.

"Izzi did a brilliant job. She asked if I had any notes but there were barely any because she completely got the songs and knew where the spaces were without any guidance. I wanted cello parts that were dramatic and romantic. She really delivered that!" James Walsh

Inspired by Paul Simon

The work of Paul Simon has been a massive influence in shaping the sound of 'Renewal'.

"I look at how carefully he (Simon) crafts the songs. 'Renewal' is about when your kids reach adulthood and you want them to go off and flourish. For them to be completely independent but just know that you're there if you need them." James Walsh
