The band that gave birth to The Beatles
Join us for a special night as John Lennon’s Original Quarrymen headline Redditch Revival at Whitetail @ The Hart.
On Saturday 6 July 1957, the Quarrymen were on stage with John Lennon on the day he met Paul McCartney. They got back together in 1997 to celebrate that meeting, enjoyed it so much that they re-formed the group forty years on, and have been playing ever since.
The line-up
Two of the five original musicians are still in the band. Rod Davis, from Quarry Bank School, started on banjo and now plays guitar. Colin Hanton is on drums. Colin played with John, Paul and George on the famous 1958 Percy Phillips recording session, which produced “In Spite of All the Danger” and “That’ll Be the Day” and featured on The Beatles’ Anthology, Volume 1.
Joining them are renowned Beatles author David Bedford on bass, a friend from Penny Lane, and Henry Duff Lowe on keyboards. Henry’s dad, John, played with the Quarrymen in 1958 and was also on the Percy Phillips session.
The music
Expect the skiffle and rock ’n’ roll of the mid-fifties that influenced the birth of The Beatles: “Rock Island Line”, “Mean Woman Blues”, “Midnight Special”, “Twenty Flight Rock”, “Blue Suede Shoes” and many more. In between the songs, they tell stories with a proper Liverpool sense of humour, giving Beatles fans a unique insight into where it all began.
Played all over the world
Since 1997 they’ve played across Europe, Canada, Japan, Cuba, Russia, Mexico, Brazil and the USA. They featured in the BBC’s It Was 50 Years Ago Today and Channel 4’s Rock ’n’ Roll Britannia. In 2010 they played a mammoth New York concert on what would have been John’s 70th birthday, with guests including Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton and Neil Innes.
